In a kitchen renovation, that could mean anything from a granite countertop to a wall oven to an entire run of upper cabinets.
These are not light items, and they are rarely easy to carry. A little bit of the right equipment changes the whole job.
Why Kitchens Are Trickier Than They Look
People assume a kitchen remodel is mostly about paint colors and cabinet hardware. In reality, it is one of the heaviest rooms to renovate.
Countertops made of granite, quartz, or marble can weigh several hundred pounds per slab.
Cast-iron sinks, built-in appliances, and even solid-wood cabinetry add up quickly.
All of that has to move through hallways, up stairs, or through tight doorways without damaging the materials or the surrounding house.
This is where things used to go wrong the old-fashioned way.

Slab dollies and A-frame carts are designed specifically for moving countertop material.
A slab dolly allows two people to roll a heavy piece of stone across a floor rather than carry it, protecting both the slab and the installers.
A-frame carts hold multiple slabs upright in slots, preventing thin stone from flexing and cracking during transport.
Vacuum lifters. This is the tool that would have saved that quartz slab from its doorway battle.
A vacuum lifter uses suction cups powered by a hand pump or an electric motor to grip a flat surface, such as stone, glass, or a large mirror.
Two people can lift and steady a slab that would otherwise require four, and the suction grip means there is nothing to slip on.
Chain hoists and come-alongs. For heavier lifts, such as setting a cast-iron farmhouse sink into place or hanging a large range hood, a chain hoist provides a crew with controlled, incremental lifting power.
A come-along works on a similar principle but uses a ratcheting cable, which is handy for pulling an appliance into a tight spot rather than lifting it straight up.
Rigging straps and slings. Nylon slings and ratchet straps distribute weight over a wider surface than a bare hand or rope ever could.
When a crew needs to lift an appliance onto a truck lift gate or stabilize a slab on an A-frame cart, these straps keep the load secure without digging into the material.
Appliance dollies with stair climbers. Getting a refrigerator or range up a flight of stairs used to mean a lot of straining and a real risk of dropping the unit.
Stair-climbing dollies use a tri-wheel design that rolls the appliance down each step in a controlled motion instead of a controlled fall.
Shackles. These small metal connectors may not look like much, but they are what actually join a sling or chain to a hoist or an anchor point.
Quality shackles with a rated pin make the difference between a load that stays put and one that slips loose at the worst possible moment.
On a kitchen job, a crew might use them to connect a chain hoist to an overhead beam before lifting a heavy island countertop into position.
Adjustable spreader bars. When a load, such as a long countertop or a wide cabinet run, needs to be lifted evenly from multiple points, a spreader bar keeps the slings from angling inward and squeezing the material. Because the bar is adjustable, a crew can widen or narrow it to match the load being lifted that day, keeping the load level and reducing stress on the slab or panel as it rises.
The Safety Case
Every one of these tools solves the same basic problem by replacing raw human effort with mechanical advantage.
That matters because most renovation injuries happen exactly when something heavy and awkward must be moved from one place to another.
A dropped slab can shatter.
A dropped appliance can crush a foot or damage a floor. A strained back can put a contractor out of work for weeks.
Insurance companies and contractors both know this. That is part of why more renovation crews are investing in proper rigging equipment rather than relying on extra bodies to muscle things into place.
Fewer people touching a heavy object usually means fewer chances of something going wrong.
The Efficiency Case
Safety is the primary reason to use rigging, but the efficiency gains are just as real.
A two-person crew with a vacuum lifter can install a countertop in a fraction of the time it would take a four-person crew working by hand.
Less time spent maneuvering material means more time on the actual installation work, which keeps a renovation on schedule.
There is also the matter of precision.
Setting a heavy appliance or a slab into its final position often requires small, careful adjustments.
A chain hoist or a come-along allows a single person to nudge it into place gradually, rather than a group coordinating a shove all at once. That kind of control tends to produce cleaner results, with fewer scuffed cabinets and chipped countertops.
What This Means for Homeowners
You are probably not renting a vacuum lifter for your own kitchen project, and that is fine. The point is knowing what to look for when hiring help.
A contractor who arrives with proper rigging gear, rather than just extra hands, is usually the one who has thought through the job’s logistics before the first slab arrives.
