Sherwin Williams Drift of Mist 9166: My Honest Review

Sherwin Williams Drift of Mist in Living Area
Sherwin Williams Drift of Mist in Living Area

When I was planning to change my paint, I wasn’t sure which exact shade I wanted.

Like I love white but I don’t like warm shades or properly cool striking shades.

I wanted something in between, something that surprises me and doesn’t ruin my want to experiment with new themes every now and then.

Sherwin Williams Drift of Mist made it easier for me with its versatile appearance caused by the lighting.

Things to Know Before

Precautions: Don’t take room lighting for granted, it affects appearance a lot.

Drift of Mist can appear cooler and more greenish in north-facing or low-light spaces, which may not suit warm color schemes.

Testing large swatches on different walls in the actual room and observing different lighting throughout the day is the smartest thing you can do.

Expectations: Expect a versatile and soft neutral that adapts well to different styles and materials, offering subtle warmth and green undertones.

In terms of appearance,  it’s not a stark white rather, it provides a very gentle hint of color that can shift from greige to soft gray-green.

Maintenance and Durability

It depends upon the sheen you use on different spaces.

Sherwin Williams offers different finishes – Flat/Matte, Eggshell/Satin, Semi-Gloss, and Gloss.

Its premium formulations are mainly covered by Satin or Semi-Gloss due to cleanability.

It is suitable for high traffic areas and spaces where smudges and fingerprints are common.

You can easily wipe without damage which helps in maintaining a fresh look.

For lasting color retention, resistant to scuffs, durability for longer periods, strong adhesion and for a refined look I used Emeralds and Duration.

But that doesn’t mean the color doesn’t have quality to appear less worn in busy areas.

Finish and Texture

Knowingly Satin and Semi- Gloss works wonderfully, does that mean we can’t or shouldn’t use Flat Finish?

Of course not, flat finishes are great for bedrooms and ceilings or low traffic spaces because of its reflection and absorption of light which gives a soft and serene glow.

Moreover, our concern is usually for large areas like walls and cabinets which tend to be crowded.

Satin or semi-Gloss is the best option for it to keep its clean, handy and untouched appearance. Its shine and glare can make the area come across very calm.

Perle Noir, Mindful Gray, Rainwashed and Comfort Gray did the right job to highlight different parts of my home.

Honestly, I painted my entire house with Sherwin Williams Drift of Mist and I haven’t regretted a day.

Though maybe because I have used other colours from bright striking to warm dim and now I wanted a balance which satisfies me.

But, I have been talking about why I like this color.

Exterior

Drift of Mist SW 9166 gives a soft, inviting neutral base that feels modern plus timeless, complementing natural yet architectural details.

It looks very appealing with darker trim and metallic finishes on trim.

Drift of Mist Sherwin Williams exterior appears lighter and warmer in daylight bright sunlight and its greenish undertone reacts so beautifully in natural light.

If you want to highlight architectural details, you can easily opt for charcoal gray, deep brown, or matte black.

For the elements we can work with metallic finishes like bronze, brass, or aged copper that bring warmth and luxury.

Cabinets

The cabinets of my kitchen and bathroom have Drift of Mist on.

It brings calm sophistication, works wonderfully with countertops and backsplashes in cream or stone tones, and contrasts nicely with wood islands or open shelving.

Drift of Mist Sherwin Williams Cabinets worked nicely because of the right sheen and before preparation.

If you paint different surfaces without prepping them, as per the requirement, you’re going to lose a lot of will and end up wasting the paint.

Bathroom

Drift of Mist SW 9166 promotes spa-like serenity  and its muted green-grey undertones pair naturally with soft blues and organic materials like marble and natural wood, making the space feel fresh.

But the sheen here to use should be very specific like satin, semi-gloss or even gloss to save the paint from peeling out.

These sheens are actually great for excess water and traffic areas.

Be careful and gain knowledge about the surface around you to use proper finish and how you want your texture to appear.

Bedroom

For the bedroom, I wanted minimal reflection from what a reflective colour can already provide.

Using Flat sheen saved me only because of the low traffic space.

If you have kids in your home or people in your family often like to visit and see your changes everywhere including the bedroom, you might want to consider the finish.

Otherwise, you will end up getting frustrated trying to clean the finish that can’t be cleaned.

The colour in itself can hide imperfections and few marks but it will not make it gone.

Living Room

Drift of Mist fosters a soft, welcoming environment.

It provides a gentle visual that works gracefully with natural wood furniture, brass or gold accents, and cozy textiles.

The color’s subtle complexity visually enriches conversation without getting overwhelming.

Using unique elements to decor is not only fun but a task too where you start to explore your likes and dislikes.

By the time, you gain an insight into what works best with and what not including the market places and other important stuff for you don’t have to hire somebody in future and can actually enjoy the process without facing personal bias.

Conclusion

We have explored Sherwin Williams Drift of Mist as the best color without ignoring its drawbacks.

You will only find it hard to catch up with any colour if you didn’t explore it enough or you didn’t take your time to understand your vision.

I will suggest that you create a mood board so you can visualise what exactly you’re going to deal with and test samples and take time to understand every stage.

We have seen what colour we can opt for with different requirements, how we can decorate it, maintain it, and take smart moves for durability.
