Heavy metal poisoning is one of the most common emergencies in pet birds, and one of the hardest to diagnose quickly.
The reason isn’t a lack of good testing science. It’s a much more basic obstacle: birds don’t have much blood to give.
Why Birds Are Different
A parrot, cockatiel, or other companion bird can safely have only a small fraction of the blood volume a dog or cat could provide for the same panel. That limitation has created a real gap in veterinary diagnostics.

Older cages and toys, galvanized wire, costume jewelry, mirror backings, curtain weights, and certain paints are all common sources.
Diet can play a role too. Because the clinical picture is so easy to confuse with other illnesses, a fast, accurate blood metals result is often the difference between early treatment and a bird that gets sicker while the cause remains unclear.
The Method IAS Developed

Following Up: Where Did It Come From?
Blood testing tells you a pet has been exposed to something.
